Family FAQ

You asked:

My son wants a camera and web-enabled mobile phone, but I've heard that some schools are banning them. Why is that?

The Online Family answers:

It's true, many schools are indeed prohibiting camera mobile phones on campus. The main concern is that kids can use camera phones to cheat on exams. For example, a high schooler could photograph a test during first period and send the photo to a friend who doesn't have to take the test until sixth period. Or kids could even photograph and ship correct test answers to each other during the same class if the teacher wasn't keeping a close eye. There are similar concerns about students texting answers back and forth via their mobile phones. Also camera phones can be distracting during class, or even violate the privacy of some kids who don't want to be photographed at school only to find the picture posted on the Internet. So in general, many schools are saying "no" to mobile phones at school altogether.

Tech Tip

Printer Power

Always shut down your printer using its power button, versus your power strip's on/off switch. Otherwise, its print heads might not line up and print properly when you turn it back on.
